The first phase of the Champions League is over.

Liverpool lost 3-2 away at PSV on Wednesday but remained top of the table after Barcelona could only draw with Atalanta.

Arsenal ensured they finished third by beating Girona 2-1, while Atletico Madrid, Bayer Leverkusen and Lille all progress too.

Aston Villa round of the top eight after Villa beat Celtic 4-2 in a thrilling game. All of those teams progress automatically, avoiding the two-legged play-off round.

Manchester City overcame Club Brugge 3-1 to booked their spot in the play-offs, while Real Madrid, PSG, Celtic, Juventus and AC Milan among the big hitters to join them.

The teams who finish in the top eight in the league will automatically qualify for the round of 16. Those who finish between 9th and 24th will compete in a two-legged knockout play-off to earn the right to progress, while those who finish lower will be eliminated from European competition entirely.
