Champions League: PSG boss Enrique says no resting on laurels against Monaco

Paris Saint Germain head coach Luis Enrique urged his players to avoid trying to defend their slender lead and target victory in Wednesday night's second leg of their Champions League last-16 play-off against Monaco.

PSG go into the clash at the Parc des Princes 3-2 ahead.

Enrique, who steered the squad to the Champions League crown last May, hailed his players for overturning a two-goal deficit at the Stade Louis II on 17 February.

Champions League: PSG boss Enrique calls for cool heads in play-off with Monaco

"It'll be tricky because Monaco will be starting the game a goal down and have nothing to lose," Enrique said.

"So we need to know that there'll be tough moments and the best way of handling those is to play as we normally do – to try to hold onto the ball and to press in the same way when we don't have the ball.

"We're out not to defend a result but to win a game."

Last season, PSG had to negotiate two matches with Ligue 1 club Brest in the play-offs for a place in the last-16.

Having negotiated those tests, they edged past Liverpool in the last-16 and saw off English Premier League outfits Aston Villa and Arsenal in the quarter-finals and semi-finals respectively.

In the final in Munich, they pulverized Inter Milan 5-0.

Monaco boss Sébastien Pocognoli said his side had nothing to lose in the second leg.

"PSG are strong, but so are we," added defender Jordan Teze.

'Quality within squad'

"We’re capable of giving PSG a good game. We have a lot of quality within our squad and we’re more confident now."

PSG are likely to field the Morocco international Achraf Hakimi who was charged on Tuesday with raping a woman in February 2023.

The 27-year-old denies the accusation. "I am calmly awaiting this trial, which will allow the truth to come out publicly," Hakimi said on social media.

In other second leg ties on Wednesday night, Real Madrid take a 1-0 lead into their match against Benfica and Borussia Dortmund start with a two-goal advantage over the Italian top flight outfit Atalanta.

Another Italian club, Juventus, face an even tougher battle. Galatasaray lead them 5-2 following the first leg in Turkey.

In Tuesday night's matches, the Norwegian champions Bodoe/Glimt advanced to the last-16 for the first time after beating Inter Milan 5-2 on aggregate.

There were also aggregate victories for Newcastle United, Atletico Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen.
