Chains have come off as demands made to call a halt to the new breed of "danger" cycle paths

Anger and frustration is growing over the contentious cycle lane snaking its way towards Paisley.

The track has now reached Elderslie and has again been savaged after it emerged safety islands for people crossing have now been removed.

Calls have been made to put the brakes on the bike routes that are being created on major roads and causing hazards.

And it’s emerged the congregation at Elderslie Parish Church will no longer be able to park outside.

On wider sections of the Main Road, traffic will no longer be able to pass safely as the busy route is reduced to single carriageway because of the eight foot wide path.

Councillor John Hood, who has already highlighted issues with the route as it passed through Johnstone, said: “This is a death trap.

“There has been no proper consultation and people just don’t want this.

“The road has been narrowed so much in Elderslie that the islands have been removed because there is no room for them.

“There has been no thought into it and at the church up to 30 cars will no longer be able to park there.

“This whole route is not fit for purpose and confuses people.”

A petition launched by Angie Kaplan when the 10km Howwood-Paisley route was built through Johnstone has reached nearly 1,300 names calling for a halt.

Now Councillor Hood wants a change in direction, to create better access to the existing National Cycle Route 7 which is already in place.

The new track will meet Cycle Route 7 via a new zebra crossing just before Elderslie Golf Club.

He said: “In my view linking people onto Route 7 is clearly the safest option.

“Prior to this new track buses would slow down and traffic would pass them, this cannot happen now and will make journeys longer.

“Whoever thought this out must be crazy.”

Labour claim the thousands of pounds it is costing – paid for directly by the Scottish Government – could be better spent on society’s vulnerable.

Labour leader Eddie Devine has already blasted the relentless march of the cycleways through Renfrewshire.

He said: “It’s time for Scottish Government and council officials to stop turning our streets into a Renfrewshire stage of the Tour De France.

“They need to put the brakes on this madness of creating cycle lanes on more and more of our main roads, in places they are just not needed and causing all sorts of problems.”

The petition is likely to be sent to Renfrewshire Council next week and there is still time to have your say via https://www.change.org/p/renfrewshire-council-stop-the-changes-for-main-road-in-johnstone-for-drivers-and-cyclists

Renfrewshire Council was asked for comment but a spokesman failed to do so.
