CFP rankings for 2024: When does the first top 25 come out?

The first College Football Playoff rankings of the 2024 season will be revealed on Tuesday night, and the Ohio State Buckeyes will get their first projected opponents in a 12-team playoff.

Ohio State football enters the first CFP ranking at No. 3 in both the U.S. LBM Coaches Poll and the AP Top 25 following a road win over the Penn State Nittany Lions.

Ohio State football College Football Playoffs projection

As things stand, it’s likely that Ohio State will hold either the No. 2 or No. 3 seed in the first rankings. Oregon is the clear projected No. 1, followed by the group of Ohio State, Georgia and Miami. The committee ranking Miami ahead of Ohio State and potentially dropping the Buckeyes down to No. 4 would be a shock, as the Hurricanes don’t have any signature wins this season and several close escapes.

As a 2-seed, Ohio State would play the winner of a No. 7 vs. No. 10 matchup in the first round, while the No. 3 seed would play either No. 6 or No. 11.

The thing to remember here is that in order be ranked inside the top four in the final CFP rankings, Ohio State must win the Big Ten. Non-champions will be ranked starting with No. 5, so while Oregon and Ohio State should both appear in the initial top four, only the Big Ten champion will start the playoffs in the top four.

How many teams are in CFP 2024?

For the first time, there will be 12 teams participating in the College Football Playoffs. There are five automatic bids for each of the Power Four conference champions and one to the highest-ranked Group of Five champion. The remaining seven slots are given to the seven at-large teams.

How does the College Football Playoff format work?

The top four seeds will be on a bye as the CFP kicks off. The next four highest-seeded teams will host on-campus playoff games as follows:

  • No. 5 vs No. 12, winner will play No. 4
  • No. 6 vs No. 11, winner will play No. 3
  • No. 7 vs No. 10, winner will play No. 2
  • No. 8 vs No. 9, winner will play No. 1
