Cessnock Road fatal crash: Truck driver charged with dangerous driving

A TRUCK driver was allegedly driving dangerously while suspended when he was involved in a fatal crash near Maitland earlier this year.

The 34-year-old man allegedly behind the wheel of an Isuzu truck when it collided with a Nissan Patrol on Cessnock Road on August 5 has now been charged.

Emergency services, including police and paramedics, rushed to reports of a two-vehicle crash at Gillieston Heights just before 4pm that afternoon.

The driver of the Nissan Patrol, a 31-year-old man, sadly died at the scene.

His passenger, a 30-year-old woman, suffered minor injuries and was taken to John Hunter Hospital in a stable condition.

The driver of the truck sustained leg and spinal injuries in the crash and was taken to John Hunter Hospital in a serious condition.

Specialist police from the Crash Investigation Unit combed the crime scene for clues about how the crash unfolded.

Following police investigations, the 34-year-old truck driver was charged with a string of allegations, including dangerous driving occasioning death and negligent driving occasioning death.

He was charged with not keeping left of a dividing line, driving while his licence was suspended and possessing a prohibited drug.

He will front Maitland Local Court for the first time on January 15, 2025.
