Cement lorry loses control and smashes into house with family inside on Tyrone main street

A family escaped injury after a cement mixer crashed into a house in a horror collision on Saturday morning.

Fire crews had to rescue a man from the first floor of an adjacent property which was structurally unsafe following the incident.

Emergency services were called to the scene after the large vehicle collided with the home on Main Street in Pomeroy, Co Tyrone.

A family were inside the home at the time but were not injured, Belfast Live reports.

Cordons remained in place as fire crews and police assessed the scene on Saturday afternoon. There were no reports of any injuries but the man who was rescued was treated for shock at the scene.

Speaking to Belfast Live, Mark Maginness from the fire service said: "We came down and had to rescue an individual from an adjacent building, from an upstairs flat, our crews used a ladder to rescue the man from the window.

"He was treated for shock. There was a family in the house it struck but they all escaped. There were no injuries.

"The Main Street is closed and is going to be while the investigation is ongoing. We were part of the rescue and then ensuring public safety and the cordon around the property."

Local Sinn Fein councillor Cathal Mallaghan told PA the crash had caused substantial damage to the building.

Mr Mallaghan said local residents he had spoken to were "really shocked".

"People were getting up having their breakfast. It's the last thing you'd expect obviously.

"The room that the lorry went through was the games room in the home. If it had of been later in the day perhaps children would have been in there playing. So it is really lucky there was nobody hurt," he said.

He later told Belfast Live: "Everybody who lives around the property involved, they are very shocked, it was a very scary time for them this morning."

He said the work of the emergency services was "first class" and thanked those involved for their work.

A number of houses along the road were evacuated as a precaution on Saturday and the road was closed.
