Celtics ‘could be moving on’ from Blake Griffin

Last season, the Boston Celtics added Blake Griffin to their roster to provide depth at the end of the bench. Griffin quickly became a fan favorite and appeared to enjoy his time in Boston. Unfortunately, Griffin’s deal was only for one year. As such, the veteran big man is once again an unrestricted free agent.

Currently, the Celtics have one open roster spot remaining – although they could open up some additional roster room by waiving Dalano Banton (partially guaranteed) or Justin Champagnie (non-guaranteed). According to Masslive’s Brian Robb, Boston will likely be moving on from Griffin this summer as they seek to add depth in other areas.

“It’s been eerily quiet on the Blake Griffin front since the season ended. Brad Stevens made no mention of him in any of his press conferences, and that could be a signal the team is moving on,” Robb wrote. “For now, the Celtics may want the roster flexibility to consider other additions knowing that Griffin is available as a backup plan for another true big. The team probably isn’t ready to commit guaranteed money to him though until other alternatives are ruled out.”

Griffin participated in 41 regular-season games for the Celtics last season, averaging 4.1 points and 3.8 rebounds per contest. As a 14-year veteran, Griffin is clearly looking to play a small role on a contending team in the hope of winning a championship before he calls time on his career.

Despite developing a good reputation with Celtics fans and the majority of their roster, it would appear Griffin’s next opportunity to contend for a championship will be somewhere else in the league.
