Celtic vs Rangers ref watch as penalty & no-goal calls are analysed

Nick Walsh was the man in the middle as he took charge of Celtic vs Rangers today.

The Scottish Cup final 2024 promised a lot – and it didn’t disappoint with plenty of drama throughout, with Adam Idah scoring the winner late in the game.

Here’s how we assessed some of the major calls made in the game - with credit going to the officials when it's due…

Celtic penalty shout for handball

There were strong calls for a penalty around a quarter of the way through the game after the ball collided with Ben Davies’ arm.

It did appear to be rather outstretched, however, when analysing the short distance the ball travels after the deflection, there was no way this could’ve been given as a spot kick.

Steven McLean on VAR took no time at all to indicate a wave on in the play. No penalty.

Verdict: Correct decision

Disallowed Rangers goal

It looked as though half-time substitute Abdallah Sima had given the blue half of Glasgow the lead.

Celebrations were cut short though after VAR instructed an on-field review to take place.

As Walsh rewatched the goal, it became apparent that Nicolas Raskin had fouled Joe Hart as the corner came into the box, therefore impeding the Celtic goalkeeper from claiming the cross.

The on-field ref changed his mind and awarded a free-kick to Celtic, chopping off the Rangers goal.

Verdict: Correct decision

Potential Rangers red card

Mohamed Diomande - who enjoyed a good afternoon on a personal note - was the subject of a late VAR check for a potential red card.

The soon-to-be Ivory Coast international appeared to kick at Daizen Maeda after the Japanese player was punished for a blatant foul, but it looked like he just missed in his connection.

Beaton reviewed the incident on VAR, but opted not to send Walsh to his pitchside monitor to check it himself, as the midfielder remained on the park.

Verdict: Correct decision
