Celtic transfer update as Parkhead outcast has 'options in England' with Hoops future in doubt

James McCarthy is said to be weighing up his Celtic future after finding minutes limited in Glasgow's east-end.

The Republic of Ireland international was not included in manager Ange Postecoglou's squad as the Hoops ran out 2-0 winners over Aberdeen on Sunday afternoon in Premiership action. McCarthy has been involved in pre-season but joined fellow periphery men Christopher Jullien and Albian Ajeti in watching their league opener from afar.

It is reported by The Scottish Sun that the former Crystal Palace and Everton midfielder has 'transfer options in England' to size up before the window shuts on the first of next month. He made only six starts last season and the arrival of Australian international Aaron Mooy has only served to push him further down the Celtic pecking order. There are still three years remaining on his deal though so a decision will need to be made on what to do.

Joining the Parkhead side last summer brought a return to Scottish football for the first time since leaving Hamilton Accies in 2009 for McCarthy.

During his stint south of the border, he enjoyed successful spells at Wigan Athletic, Everton and most recently Crystal Palace.

In the meantime he will continue seeking to break into Postecoglou's first-team plans, with an away fixture at Ross County coming on Saturday.
