Celtic striker Oh Hyeon-gyu branded 'better version' of Giorgos Giakoumakis by Frank McAvennie

Oh Hyeon-gyu is a 'better version' of Giorgos Giakoumakis.

That's the verdict of Celtic hero Frank McAvennie who has hailed Ange Postecoglou's capture of the striker. He was brought in during the January transfer window alongside Tomoki Iwata, Yuki Kobayashi and Alistair Johnston as the Hoops cashed in on the big Greek striker to Atlanta United and Josip Juranovic was sold to Union Berlin.

Giakoumakis has got off to a flyer in the MLS with his new side making it five goals in five starts in the dramatic last-gasp weekend win over Chicago Fire. Kyogo Furuhashi is the No1 striker at the Hoops with 29 goals in all competitions to date. He's on course to smash the 30-barrier and beyond and now has help in the shape of Oh in the striker ranks.

The South Korean is still adjusting to life in Glasgow but has three goals to his name with most of his appearances coming from the bench in the final stages of games. National team boss Jurgen Klinsmaan was in attendance to watch him at Rugby Park as he heaped praise on the 22-year-old striker in the build-up.

Celtic could secure the league title in the first game of the split and that could see the youngster handed many more minutes to impress Postecoglou and his international team boss. McAvennie is a big fan and believes his is the perfect replacement for Giakoumakis.

He told Football Insider: “I have seen Klinsmann make remarks about Celtic before. The stadium, the atmosphere, he thinks it is a wonderful environment and his player is coming through that.

“He will get game time, he is another example of the manager. Giakoumakis left and he brought Oh in and I think he is a better version. He is quicker and is only young.

“If Kyogo gets injured I do not have a problem with him playing up front. I think he will get a lot of game time. You can see he is eager to get on the score sheet and he wants to do well.

“Coming on in front of 60,000 every week is not a bad way to be brought into it. Nothing is going to phase him if he goes anywhere else.“
