Celtic star Aaron Mooy named in Australia squad but no Tom Rogic as host of SPFL names selected

Celtic star Aaron Mooy has been named as part of Australia's 26-man squad for the World Cup - but there is no place for Tom Rogic.

Ange Postecoglou swooped to bring the midfielder to the Scottish champions on a free transfer this summer. After a host of appearances from the bench as he built up his fitness the 32-year-old played three Premiership 90 minutes in a row before being rested against Dundee United as part of a squad rotation that has been the norm at Parkhead this season.

The experienced midfielder, with 53 caps to his name, got to test himself against the best at club level during Celtic's Champions League campaign and now he will once again be part of the biggest tournament in the world as the Socceroos bid to cause a major upset in a section containing France, Denmark and Tunisia. Graham Arnold has decided against the inclusion of Tom Rogic who has only recently signed for English Championship side West Brom. He's only played 150 minutes of football for his new club after a summer without any action following his departure from Glasgow.

Mooy is joined by a host of SPFL stars including Hibs' Martin Boyle and Hearts trio Cammy Devlin, Nathaniel Atkinson and Kye Rowles.

Former Rangers and Easter Road striker Jason Cummings - now starring for Central Coast Mariners - has also made the cut.

On his squad for Qatar, Arnold said: “It’s been a unique and difficult qualification campaign and we now arrive in Qatar with an exciting squad which will do everything to make Australia proud on the world stage.

“Over the past four years, 32 players have made their debut for the national team. I want to thank every player who has helped the team over this journey. We have called upon 68 players during the qualifying campaign and every one of them has played a part in getting us here.

“The make-up of our team reflects Australia’s multicultural landscape. Our boys come from all over the world, they all have different journeys, but we are united by one jersey.”
