Celtic side with Premiership clubs in Sky Sports TV deal debate as Rangers not decided on £29m offer

Celtic have joined 10 of their Premiership competitors in favour of the SPFL’s proposed new deal with Sky Sports - but Rangers are yet to take a position.

The Athletic report that the terms of this new contract will see the annual value of the broadcast partnership increase from £25million to £29m, but there's the potential of it going to £37m by the end of the agreement in 2029.

Every club is 'thoroughly on board' with what is on offer and no objection to the proposal was made in the meeting but Rangers are 'taking their time to consider the intricacies of the deal.' The Ibrox club and the SPFL are still in dispute following the cinch league sponsorship deal last year which was renegotiated to reflect the absence of Rangers, controversially containing a clause that means the Light Blues will not form part of any future league sponsorship offerings for another four years.

The existing Sky Sports package expires in 2025 and is worth £25m a year to all 42 clubs within the SPFL but the new contract will increase in value each year and, from the start of term 24/25, the number of games Sky can show will jump to 60 from 48.

Payments will reach a total of £29.5m per season from 2025-26 and remain at that level until 2028-29. Thar could go to £37m a season as it's been claimed that Sky can show an additional 20 games on top of that.

It's not a figure that can be banked on though as they will decide in two years time whether they are 'taking up the option of one package of ten games, the two packages, or none at all.'

An annual £29m per each club in the SPFL is worth an approx £690,476. Sky want rights exclusivity for their cash but will allow Premiership clubs to show five of their home games on pay-per-view. Lower league clubs wanted to broadcast games too but it appears that's not included.
