Celtic open to 11th hour transfer offers for midfielder but reunion with former teammate shut down

Celtic are willing to let James McCarthy leave on loan before the transfer window slams shut later this evening.

The Republic of Ireland international signed a long-term deal at Parkhead in the early stages of Ange Postecoglou's reign, but he has struggled to make regular starts. He has been omitted from several squads already this term but McCarthy has still been about the squad, despite Reo Hatate, Callum McGregor, Aaron Mooy, David Turnbull and Yosuke Ideguchi among those competing with him.

Sky Sports have reported that Celtic are 'open to loan offers' for the battler who made a cameo appearance in their Premier Sports Cup round of 16 victory at Ross County. They also claim that Stoke City - managed by former Hamilton Accies teammate Alex Neil - will 'not be making an offer for the player today, after various reports linked him with a move to the club.'
