Celtic legend Frank McGarvey funeral service today as club's 'thoughts and prayers' with family

The funeral service for Celtic and St Mirren legend Frank McGarvey will take place today.

The former striker passed away on New Year's day aged just 66 after a battle with cancer.

A Requiem Mass will be held at St Anthony's Church and broadcast on YouTube to allow fans to pay their respects before he is finally laid to rest.

Details of the service were shared by Celtic on Twitter with the club offering condolences.

They posted: "The funeral of Celtic icon Frank McGarvey can be viewed on the link tomorrow (Monday, January 16) at 1pm. Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with the family and friends of Frank at this difficult time."

Frank's family revealed last October that he had been been diagnosed with the disease and he made his final appearance on the pitch at Parkhead during the team's 6-1 win over Hibs, thanking fans for their support over the years.

His son Sean broke news of his passing on January 1.

Frank's professional career began at St Mirren in 1975, where he spent four years before moving south to join Liverpool. He returned to Scotland after 10 months at Anfield, signing for Celtic in March 1980 for a fee of around £270,000, becoming, for a short time, Scotland's most expensive footballer.

During his Hoops career he played 245 times and scored 109 goals.

He won two league titles, two Scottish Cups and the League Cup with Celtic, and the Scottish Cup with St Mirren in 1987, after returning to Paisley for a second stint.

He went onto play for Queen of the South, Clyde, Shotts Bon Accord and Troon and was capped seven times for Scotland.
