Celtic and Rangers have splashed the cash around this summer but the punters still like throwing insults at each other’s transfer activity.
Hotline caller John Bruce struck a nerve when he accused Celtic of trying to buy the title after coughing up £17m so far in this window. Cameron Hall, Edinburgh, hit back and said: “Remember when Jose Mourinho, with a completely straight face, indignantly accused Manchester City of buying the league? Well, John Bruce, that’s you – except a Poundland version."
Eddie Easson, Ballingry, said: “John Bruce really needs to read the history books. His old team tried repeatedly to spend their way to the title. That was why his new team was formed and if they are not careful history may well repeat itself. Year after year Celtic try to balance their books Rangers are only interested in outdoing their rivals in everything.”
Kenny Wilson, Moffat, said: “So John Bruce is saying Celtic are buying the league. He has a very short memory as his club died from buying leagues. Celtic are strengthening their squad and also had players leave so players need to come in for them. Celtic only spend what they can afford and pay their players legitimately, something his old club never did.”
The man himself is sticking to his guns, and he’s optimistic about Rangers this season after their recent transfer splurge.
John Bruce , via email, said: “It has been refreshing to see Rangers signing new players who will strengthen the squad and excite the fans, rather than wasting tens of millions of pounds signing loan players who were already there that their parent clubs didn't want. When you add these new players to the experience of those who reached the Europa League final, along with the exciting young talent that continues to be captured by Rangers' recruitment team, the future is looking very bright at Ibrox.”
George Wilson, West Sussex, said: “Amazing that the same Celtic supporters on here who had insider knowledge of Rangers finances and insisted we were broke also now have insider knowledge of all the players we couldn’t afford to buy as they are all apparently rubbish. It was obvious that Rangers were the stronger, fitter and better team by the end of last season. They have improved their squad and still have shown a profit whilst Celtic have spent millions to keep more or less the same side.”
Jamie Thompson, Clydebank, said: “For all these delusional Celtic fans, the only reason they made the Champions League was due to the success of Ranger's over the last few years. Their club has bought anyone who can stand up, Rangers will do their talking on the pitch.”
Others are not so impressed, as John Melrose, Edinburgh, said: “This guy Rabbi Matondo must be a magician right enough. First of his fee was £1.8m, then £2m, to £2.5m, then finally £3m! Do Rangers think we button up the back? I checked this player's video reels when Celtic were linked a few months ago and came to the swift conclusion of no thanks.”
Some Celtic fans are nervous and Stephen Johnstone, Ardentinny, said: “Callum McGregor wants to draw Real Madrid in the Champions League. Well, I hope all his teammates are wearing masks as well as Callum as they will need them to hide them from an embarrassing defeat.”
Hibs were on the end of a Premier Sports Cup shocker at Falkirk and punters got a worrying sense of deja vu. John Scott, Grassmoor, said: “Why did Lee Johnson feel the need to make so many changes against Falkirk? A full stand of bemused Hibs fans were left looking at the bulk of last season's team, with players they all know are just not good enough. Pat Fenlon did the exact same thing at Queen of the South then ripped into his players after a 2-0 defeat. Please Lee, don't make the same mistakes.”
