Celtic hero Neil Lennon and Omonia suffer domestic collapse days after Europa League nightmare

Neil Lennon's week went from bad to worse as his Omonia side suffered a domestic collapse - just days after their Europa League group stage nightmare against FC Sheriff.

The Celtic hero hit out over a VAR penalty call during Thursday night's clash branding the decision 'beyond belief' and claiming the people behind the cameras making the decisions 'have never played football'. It was all part of a 3-0 defeat that had the Cypriot side start off their section that includes Manchester United and Real Sociedad in the worst possible fashion.

The visitors got off to the perfect start by finding the net inside two minutes to silence the home support. Ibrahim Akanbi Rasheed was the man to open the scoring. Ten minutes into the second period Iyayi Believe Atiemwen netted from the spot to push the visitors further ahead before Mouhamed Diop added a third with less than 15 minutes to play. Lennon admitted his disappointment over the result but is delighted to be part of the tournament and mixing it with some of Europe's top sides.

READ MORE: Celtic hero Neil Lennon suffers Omonia Europa League nightmare in group stage opener

Fast forward three days and things didn't get any better for his new side in a week he will want to put behind him fast.

After one win and one defeat in the opening two games, Omonia travelled to Apollon Limassol looking to get back to winning ways and surge up the table. They started off perfectly with Bruno Felipe netting from the penalty spot after 14 minutes for the away side. However, Ioannis Pittass levelled just after the hour before the home side turned the game on its head with seven minutes to play as Bassel Jradi grabbed the winning goal.

The win maintained the 100 per cent start to the season for the home side while for Lennon and Co, they are down in 11th with just three points at this early stage.

Ex-Celtic defender Adam Matthews once again featured from the start but fellow ex-Hoops star Gary Hooper was an unused sub as was one-time Rangers winger Brandon Barker.

Next up for Lennon and his troops is a trip to Spain to face Real Sociedad on Europa League matchday two on Thursday.
