Jota has named the team that he now wishes to win the Champions League after Celtic were knocked out of UEFA's premier cup competition in drab circumstances.
The Hoops only managed two points from a possible 18, with both of those coming against a tumultuous Shakhtar Donetsk outfit. Ange Postecoglou 's men should really have taken all three points in Warsaw, whilst they ran RB Leipzig and Shakhtar close in the home ties - though a lack of clinical edge and naivety at the back saw them flounder. A European adventure must now wait until next season, with the 5-1 stuffing away to Real Madrid on Wednesday serving a poignant reminder of the gulf in quality.
After the game, Jota - Celtic's top scorer in the competition with two goals to his name - claimed that despite his top performances, he wasn't looking to leave Celtic amid the poor continental outings. And, when pressed for an answer on who he wishes now win the tournament, he only had one team in his mind - Benfica, whom he left to join Celtic on a permanent deal at the start of this season.
He said: "Yes, without a doubt, wherever they play I will try to support [Benfica]. I was very happy that they made it through. What I wanted most was for Celtic to get through, unfortunately it wasn't possible. Now, if it's not Celtic winning the Champions League, then Benfica.
“I think it's a boy's dream. I grew up watching Spanish league games, the classics between Real Madrid and Barcelona, and today being able to score here with my family at the stadium is one of the best moments of my life, if not the best."
Celtic host Dundee United at Celtic Park on Saturday in a bid to get back to winning ways in the Scottish Premiership, and can open up a four point gap between themselves and Rangers with victory over Liam Fox's men.
