Celtic hero eyes up shock Scottish football return as boss of Premiership club 16 years after exit

Celtic legend Paul Lambert is interested in becoming the new manager of Premiership club Motherwell.

The former midfielder was a player at Fir Park in the 90s before a huge move to Borussia Dortmund in 1996 ended his 'Well stint after three years. He returned to Scotland a year later with Celtic, where he stayed for eight years before ending his playing days with Livingston and launching his managerial career.

16 years have passed since Lambert left his management post at the Lions and he's since forged a strong CV in England with Wycombe Wanderers, Colchester, Norwich City, Aston Villa, Blackburn Rovers, Wolves, Stoke City and Ipswich Town, who he left in 2021. Lambert won eight trophies at Celtic after lifting the Champions League in Germany, with his eyes now on going back to Lanarkshire. Motherwell are hunting a new boss after parting company with Graham Alexander late last month.

He told The Herald: “I don’t think you can ever rule anything out. There have been jobs I have looked at down south and felt they weren’t right for me, but I gave the people the courtesy of talking to them.

“I never ever turned anyone down flat or refused to speak to them, I’ve spoken to a few and the timing just wasn’t quite right for me to come back in.

"Maybe it’s a case of people putting two and two together and thinking that because I’m not working and have an affiliation with the club then I might look at it, but until I’m asked, I can never say whether I would say yes or no. People have to ask you.

“I’ve got nothing but good things to say about the club. It’s always been a good club and I always look out for how their results go.”
