Another day in the life of the transfer window. Another full inbox on the Hotline email account.
And - surprise surprise - another virtual, ear bleeding, verbal mass brawl between Glasgow’s neighbours from hell. Tam Williamson, Lanarkshire, got the ball rolling. He wrote: “Michael Beale is signing on loan bench warmers en masse but he doesn’t realise that unless the club dips into the biscuit tin and buys extra benches then he will have nowhere to sit them.”
Some laugh eh? Don’t worry, there’s plenty more where that came from. Or at least I think Gerard Kelly was trying to be funny. He wrote: “Do the Saudis not realise Steven Gerrard’s past roles? Then looking to buy Scott Wright. Really? All that money and wanting him, then he won’t last long over there! Next he will want to buy the 'donkey' formally known as the buffalo.” George Wilson likes a chuckle too. He said: ”I found it comical listening to a Celtic supporter on the radio the other night wishing Jota well but saying he would be back there in two years as he obviously has a love for Celtic. Celtic-badge-kissing Jota obviously has a love for cash. The Celtic financial experts are also obsessed with how much cash they apparently have and - despite Rangers spending money - insist they are broke and signing duds. If they’ve never seen them play, how can they describe them as duds?”
Who knows George. Probably Best not to spend too much time worrying about it though.
Now for a more serious point from Willie Mercer, Dumfries, said: “I was surprised when Brendan Rogers agreed to come back as Celtic manager. It’s a good move for Celtic as he is a top manager, however, I am not sure it is a good move for him. No matter how much success he enjoys domestically, this will not enhance his reputation outside of Scotland.
"To raise his profile outside of Scotland he must be more successful in Europe than any Celtic manager since Martin O’Neill. Which means reaching last eight in the Champions League or going all the way in the Europa. A reputation at risk me thinks.”
Now back to the gags. Kenny Wilson, Moffat, said: “Great bit of business from Celtic getting 25 million from Jota - more than the full Rangers team is worth - then getting Kyogo to sign a four year deal. With plenty of money in the bank I expect to see some real quality signings. Things look good for the season ahead and I can only see the Celtic juggernaut keep rolling on and winning trophies.”
Now you tell me if the next guy is at the wind up.
Neil Renton, Leith, said: “We all know Celtic do things on a budget and they could also do with an attacking player now Jota has gone. Why don’t they sign Alfredo Morelos? The big man is without a club, probably still has a house in Glasgow and knows the league inside out. He’d be the signing that would help Brendan Rodgers win over the Parkhead support. It’s a no brainier.”
Another suggestion here from Livingston’s Andy Logan . He wrote: “Rangers have missed a trick by not going for the boy Ginnelly who was at Hearts. Plays up front, rapid, a free transfer and probably scored more goals last season than the two signings they have made have scored in the last 2 years?”
And finally, to restore a bit of order the last word goes to the very serious Dr Robert S Pender who wrote: “What a wise business move by Celtic to give their Japanese striker a new four year contract. He will be gone within a year and, with a long contract, it means a huge selling fee. Kind regards.”
Thanks Doc. Surprised you’ve got the patients for this.
