John McMaster reckons Aberdeen’s Cup Winners' Cup win is Scottish football’s greatest ever triumph.
Unsurprisingly, the Celtic support didn’t quite agree. Stephen Campbell said: “How can you compare being the second Scottish team to win Uefa’s third best competition to being the first British side to lift the biggest prize in club football with a team all born within 30 miles of Celtic Park. It’s a ludicrous suggestion. No-one will ever surpass what the Lisbon Lions achieved in 1967.”
Robert McEwan, Mount Vernon, said: “John McMaster is right that Aberdeen winning the Cup Winners' Cup in 1983 was an incredible achievement but there's not a team in the UK that can possibly beat the iconic Lisbon Lions.” However, Alan Flett backed up the Pittodrie legend, saying: “I totally agree with John McMaster. Aberdeen’s Cup Winners' Cup win is without doubt the greatest achievement by a Scottish club. Celtic may have won the European Cup, but that was back when football was pretty much a level playing field worldwide and they didn’t have to play against anyone to reach the final. What the Dons achieved was nothing short of remarkable and they also went on to win the Super Cup as well.”
Scotland are hoping there’s not a price to pay this week when they face Cyprus in their opening Euro 2024 qualifier. But the Tartan Army have been wincing at the £90 cost for the national team’s new 150th anniversary kit. Jim McCann, Glasgow , said: “Anybody paying such an exorbitant price for the new Scotland top wants their head examined. And for the SFA to apparently claim it ‘draws inspiration from the first uniform’ is utter nonsense. Have a look at a team photo taken at the time and you'll see the badge was totally different and the top was long sleeved too! It's nothing other than a blatant attempt to rip off the more gullible members of the Tartan Army.”
There’s not been much value for money at the national team’s £33million training base at the Oriam, with Steve Clarke’s assistant branding the training pitches a “health hazard”. But George Fairgrieve said: “So John Carver slates the Oriam, claiming the playing surfaces are a safety risk. This same surface has served Hearts well over the years without serious injury or complaint. He states Lesser Hampden is much better. Well, let me ask you, if Queens Park can provide such quality facilities then why can’t the SFA provide their own instead of putting out the begging bowl?”
Stephen Mulhern, Dumbarton, also feels Scottish fans are being short-changed with their TV options, saying: “Here we go yet again the start of a new euro campaign and Scottish fans are having to shell out to watch on a pay for view channel and the England matches are on what’s commonly known as council telly up here. It’s nothing short of a disgrace I pay the same license fee as those down south and I’m astonished that this is still being allowed to happen.”
