Celtic face UEFA punishment over Queen banners but Rangers in the clear for national anthem defiance

UEFA have announced an investigation into Celtic over banners on display in the away end during their Champions League clash with Shakhtar Donetsk in Poland. But Record Sport can reveal Rangers will not face any sanctions after they defied European football’s governing body and played the national anthem before their clash with Napoli.

Ange Postecoglou's team were in action for the first time since Queen Elizabeth 's passing as they drew 1-1 to pick up their first points of the campaign. A number of banners referencing her death were seen in the away end, including one which read 'f*** the crown' and another reading 'sorry for your loss Michael Fagan'.

And the European governing body have now announced the club face potential sanctions as they released a statement which read: "UEFA has opened disciplinary proceedings against their Old Firm rivals Celtic over banners displayed during the match against Shakhtar Donetsk in Poland on Wednesday.

"Please be informed that proceedings have been opened against Celtic FC regarding a banner displayed during their Champions League match against Shakhtar Donetsk played on September 14 in Warsaw. The UEFA disciplinary bodies will decide on the matter in due course."

In the later kick-off, rivals Rangers took on Napoli and played the national anthem before kick-off despite UEFA ordering clubs not to. But they will not face any disciplinary action. Record Sport understands UEFA received the delegate’s report but have decided not to pursue any action and the governing body consider the matter closed."
