Celtic earn almost £8m more than Rangers in Champions League with reason for difference provided

Celtic have raked in £7.6 million more than Glasgow rivals Rangers for their run in this year's Champions League.

It wasn't the return to Europe's elite table either club was looking for as both exited the competition at the group stage phase this week, having not won any of their six respective matches. Ange Postecoglou's Hoops took two points from 18 available against Real Madrid, RB Leipzig and Shakhtar Donetsk, while Giovanni van Bronckhorst's Light Blues are now statistically the worst team to have competed in this stage of the tournament.

They lost heavily to Napoli, Liverpool and Ajax, scoring twice with 20 conceded in their six straight defeats. Every point picked up in the Champions League is quite literally worth a lot of cash and two Group F draws with Shakhtar Donetsk bank Celtic €1.9m (£1.7m). Rangers meanwhile don't take anything home after being taught some harsh lessons in Group A.

Both took home a healthy €15.6m (£13.6m) fee for participation and a similar share of the TV pool upon qualifying for the tournament - €3.6m for Celtic and €3.2m for Rangers.

The big difference was in the UEFA ten-year coefficient payment. Celtic have been regular competitors in Europe throughout the last years. Rangers meanwhile were an absent force between 2012 and 2017.

That's come at a cost for their pay-out this year that sees them taking home just €2.3m to their Glasgow rivals totalling €9.1m. In total, the Hoops claim £25.4m and the Ibrox side have £17.8m.
