Celtic and Rangers handed Champions League 'different level' assessment by BT pundit Rio Ferdinand

Rio Ferdinand admits he can't wait to experience the party atmosphere at Ibrox when Rangers take on Liverpool as he pointed out the gulf facing the Old Firm at Europe's top table.

The English Premier League side make the trip north of the border for part two of the Champions League Battle of Britain showdown with the Reds coming out on top at Anfield last week. The Light Blues had keeper Allan McGregor to thank for keeping the score down as Jurgen Klopp's men ran out 2-0 winners.

Last season a big weapon in Rangers' locker was the atmosphere created at home and it is something former Manchester United and England star Ferdinand believes they need to take advantage of as Giovanni van Bronckhorst's men bid to get off the mark in the competition and keep hopes of European football after Christmas alive and kicking.

It's been a tough return to the elite tournament for the Old Firm with Celtic's hopes of progression ended last night after a home defeat to RB Leipzig. They've picked up one point from four games while Rangers are yet to get off the mark with three defeats.

Ferdinand concedes it's a different level in terms of budget and player quality for the big Scottish duo. Speaking on BT Sport, he said: They [Celtic] are playing against a team who aren't great shakes in Europe but they've got Timo Werner who is a £50million almost not failure but giveaway back to where he came from. [Christopher] Nkunku could potentially be going to Chelsea for £60m.

"It's a different level in terms of budget and quality of player. Scottish football is where it is at. It has been shown here for the level it is at. But you have to say when they come to town it is a party. We are going tomorrow. I can't wait to go to Glasgow to watch this game.

"Celtic went toe to toe with Real Madrid. They could have been one or two goals up. You want to see a different team tomorrow, moving on from Celtic to Rangers at Ibrox.

"You want that stadium to be bouncing. Liverpool are not in a good vein of form. They need to take advantage or that and use the atmosphere that is going to be generated at that stadium."
