Celtic and Rangers put aside their rivalries to collect donations for foodbanks before today's Old Firm derby. In the hours before Ange Postecoglou's Hoops hosted Giovanni van Bronckhorst's Light Blues inside Parkhead for the rivals' first clash of the season, fans of both sides gathered outside the stadium to support people in need in Glasgow.
Determined to prove there is more to life than rivalries, fans from both sides of the divide set up shop in damp conditions to collect food for the most vulnerable in society. The two groups, representing the Hoops and Gers worked together to collect donations.
Pictured outside the stadium, the teams can be seen accepting bags and bags of goodies given by generous football fans. The kind volunteers came together under the 'Fans supporting foodbanks' banner.
The group describes itself as a unique partnership that seeks to bring rival football fans together to tackle food insecurity.
Fans supporting foodbanks tweeted in support: "Hunger's not Red, Blue or Green, it doesn't have a Race, Religion or a Gender it doesn't discriminate. Hunger doesn't discriminate, it can impact on us all."
The @GersFoodBanks and @CeltsFoodbanks were out early collecting from 10:30am on Saturday, asking fans to bring food and toiletries.
Ahead of the game, the groups tweeted: "Please share so as many as possible get to see it, and please bring along some tins to donate if you’re in a position to do so. #SolidarityNotCharity #HungerDoesntWearClubColours"
SNP MSP James Dornan praised the effort, writing: "Well done to you both."
Enough is Enough, which campaigns to fight against the cost of living crisis added: "This is great to see. Keep the unity going and don’t be swayed. People in every community need fed."
