Piers Morgan's wife Celia Walden plots marriage sabbatical from him this summer

Celia Walden has opened up about her and husband Piers Morgan’s ‘marriage sabbatical’ over the past summer in a candid admission.

The 46-year-old journalist said the couple decided to take some time apart after the Covid-19 pandemic amid differing work commitments and praised the break from one another’s company.

The couple have been together since 2006 before they married in 2010 and share a daughter Elise together, who stayed with Celia during the break.

The TalkTV host's other half dished all during an appearance on Lorraine, after penning a column about the experience.

She told host Christine Lampard: “I did enjoy the predictable Twitter responses to my piece, saying, ‘Well if I was married to Piers Morgan, I would make it a very, very long sabbatical’, but he enjoyed it too. It was very good for both of us.”

The pair spent five weeks apart, during which Piers was working in London and parts of the US, while Celia was based in Los Angeles for work.

She said: “We didn’t have many phone calls, but we did message and I just found it so exciting when we saw each other again.

“It felt like the early days of our marriage or even the early days of dating and I love that.”

Christine, who is married to former footballer Frank Lampard, said: “You start to realise what you've missed as opposed to focusing on the things that maybe annoy you, so I get why that works.”

Christine about the couple’s reunion moment after their stint apart, which Celia said was “really exciting”.

She continued: “I don’t know if this happened with you and Frank, but I did find during the pandemic I was boring myself because nothing had happened, so I would find myself telling the same anecdote twice and it wasn’t even funny the first time.

“This time, it was like when you see a girlfriend again and you've got this little stash of amazing anecdotes you can’t wait to talk about. It felt like that. Neither of us could stop talking.”

She added of Piers: “He’s very pleased to be allowed back into the fold, because I think men do like their wives to be around a lot of the time, at least I think they do. He’s in fine form.”

Celia earmarked the lull after Christmas as another point she would be keen to try another sabbatical, although only for one or two weeks this time.

She said: “By the time you come out in January, nobody wants to be near their family. By February I'll be ready for another one.”
