Celebrity Hunted's Iwan Thomas: UK sprint record holder and the serious illness faced by his son which spurred him on to another Olympic first

Olympic and Commonwealth Games sprinter Iwan Thomas appears on the latest series of Celebrity Hunted for Stand Up to Cancer with another legendary British sprinter, Paralympian Richard Whitehead.

The pair are joined by Made in Chelsea stars Ollie and Gareth Locke, actress Chizzy Akudolu and queen of UK garage Lisa Maffia, as well as Drag Race UK winner The Vivienne and international reality TV star Chloe Veitch.

All eight of them will attempt to stay off the radar and remain at large for two weeks as a new crack team of hunters try and hunt them down.

It seems like a tough challenge, but lately, 47-year-old Iwan has gone through tougher as when his now three-year-old son Teddy was born he was diagnosed with Group B Strep.

An infection, Group B Strep is caused by streptococcal bacteria, which can lead to meningitis, pneumonia and sepsis, and little Teddy spent the first ten days of his life in intensive care.

And due to that life-changing experience, Iwan has challenged himself even further, as an athlete and a dad, by taking part in the Centurion Running South Downs Way 100, a hundred-mile race, and raising thousands of pounds for the Group B Strep Support charity. He was the first Olympian ever to do the race, too.

Teddy is now three and Iwan and his family have welcomed another son into the world just this week, on January 28. Iwan has always kept his partner out of the public eye.

Iwan, whose parents are Welsh but move to Middlesex before the sprinter was born, spoke to Hello! magazine about seeing Teddy so ill and why the challenge was so important.

"Seeing Teddy covered in tubes was by far the worst experience of my life,” he said. "He’s such a happy, lively boy now, and even though he’s been through a lot you wouldn’t know it. He runs everywhere, just like me, yet because of his condition still suffers for repeated infections.

"He was my inspiration for this run. When the going got tough, I took out his picture and read the words I’d written on the back: ‘For those families less fortunate.’

"So many families tell me they weren’t as lucky with their children born with the condition, and it breaks my heart. So if I can shine a light on this infection that claims the lives of so many young children then the pain of what I endured was 100% worth it."

Iwan made his name as a 400m sprinter for Team GB at the Atlanta Olympics in 1996, breaking, along with his teammates the UK 4x400m relay and winning silver, and also he's the current UK 400m record holder, a record he broke back in 1997. He's never officially retired from athletics, but from around 1999 onwards he struggled to compete.

So taking part in Celebrity Hunted should be a breeze for Iwan? On his Twitter he's said viewers won't be disappointed with what he called the 'toughest yet most enjoyable experiences ever.'
