While the animosity may fade with time, the rivalry never dies between Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers players whether the game is in the finals or on Christmas Day. And in a recent interview with The Messenger’s Mark Medina, legendary Lakers big man Mychal Thompson, that maxim remained true.
“Cedric Maxwell searches us out and starts harassing us about who is going to get to 18 titles first,” said Thompson of his fellow NBA broadcaster and former Celtics foe on the court. “We have a good time going back and forth on who is going to get there first”
“It’s a preview of the NBA Finals!” proclaimed the Minnesota alum of the Boston – Los Angeles Christmas Day game. “If everybody is healthy, I see the Lakers coming out of the West and I see Boston as one of the threats to come out of the East”

And if the Lakers do finally pass the Celtics again in overall titles this summer? “I’ll just walk around with a big 18 medallion around my chest,” said Thompson, who related he’d seek out Maxwell in particular.
“I’ll hold it over his head when he’s not looking, and then take a picture. Then, I’ll put it all over social media.”
