Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Tuesday demanded the immediate removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, alleging that the poll body chief had acted under pressure from the Prime Minister and had become a "puppet" of the Modi government, as the party's top brass met to firm up its strategy on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Addressing the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting, Kharge said Kumar "has no right to remain in office". He also said the Prime Minister should himself resign on moral grounds. "The entire nation is now aware that the CEC's consistent efforts have been aimed at benefiting the ruling party," he said.
