Federal investigators have added six states to the Cyclospora outbreak linked to recalled iceberg lettuce, widening a case count that had been confined to nine states a week earlier. The CDC outbreak page now lists 15 states, 6,358 cases, 278 hospitalizations and two deaths, both in Michigan.
The newly added states are Arkansas, Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire and North Carolina. They join Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Missouri alone has reported 1,095 cases, according to state figures cited by NBC News in its report on the expansion, roughly double what the state reported the week before.
