The 2024 NFL draft is still over a month away, which means mock drafts are in full swing. CBS Sports’ Will Brinson predicted a wild trade scenario that involves the New England Patriots and Chicago Bears.
It’s no secret that the Patriots need a quarterback. They have seemingly been connected to UNC’s Drake Maye and LSU’s Jayden Daniels from the start. However, Brinson’s mock draft has New England swinging a massive trade with the Bears for the No. 1 overall draft pick and top quarterback, USC’s Caleb Williams.
Williams would certainly add a dynamic element to the Patriots’ passing game. He tallied 3,633 yards, 30 touchdowns and five interceptions last season. That was a solid campaign coming off a Heisman Trophy-winning season in 2022 that saw him throw for 4,537 yards, 42 touchdowns and five interceptions.
This draft scenario would be bold, and it involves a lot of moving parts. Brinson wrote:
In this particular instance, the Bears get THREE future firsts and a 2024 second-round pick from the Patriots to move down to No. 3. The Pats are that desperate for a quarterback, and it’s the opposite of what Bill Belichick would do.
New England needs a star quarterback for the future, and they may have to pay a premium price to get it. Either way, the Patriots’ draft slot provides intrigue, as they can go several ways with it.
