CBS renews S.W.A.T. for seventh and final season despite backlash

S.W.A.T. Season 7 almost didn't happen

The hit cop drama series, S.W.A.T., is set to return for its seventh and final season after a last-minute save from cancellation. Lead actor Shemar Moore, alongside devoted viewers, played a significant role in convincing CBS to reverse their decision. The show, which premiered in 2017, has gained a loyal fanbase over the years.

S.W.A.T. revolves around Sergeant II Daniel 'Hondo' Harelson, portrayed by Shemar Moore, a former marine who leads the Special Weapons and Tactics unit of the LAPD. The series is based on the original 1975 TV series and the 2003 film featuring Samuel L. Jackson, Colin Farrell, and LL Cool J.

Co-creator and former showrunner Aaron Rashaan pitched a reboot of S.W.A.T. based on his personal experiences with the police while growing up in Kansas City. The show strikes a balance between being a 'pro-cop' series and a 'pro-community' show, according to executive producer Shawn Ryan.

In May 2023, CBS initially decided not to renew S.W.A.T. for a seventh season. However, this drew backlash from Shemar Moore and fans who criticized the network for its lack of diversity. Moore, in an Instagram video, voiced his disappointment and highlighted the show's diverse cast. The outcry from viewers ultimately convinced CBS to renew the series for a final season of 13 episodes.

Due to Writer's Guild of America and Actor's Guild strikes, the final season's premiere was delayed until February 2024. The first episode of Season 7 is set to air on February 16, 2024, at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT. The premiere will follow the team as they head to Mexico to escort a fugitive back to the U.S., encountering unexpected challenges along the way.

This final season of S.W.A.T. will consist of 13 episodes, making it the shortest season in the show's history. Most of the Season 6 cast will be returning, including Shemar Moore and Patrick St. Esprit. Additionally, Anna Enger Ritch, who debuted in Season 5 as Officer Zoe Powell, will join as a series regular.

While initially believed to be the show's last season, Shemar Moore expressed optimism about the possibility of S.W.A.T. continuing beyond Season 7. The future of the series remains uncertain, but fans can look forward to the thrilling conclusion of S.W.A.T. as the show returns in 2024.

With its dedicated fanbase and impactful storytelling, S.W.A.T. has become a popular police procedural series that explores the complexities of law enforcement and community dynamics. As the show gears up for its final season, viewers can anticipate intense action, compelling character arcs, and a satisfying conclusion to this beloved series.
