CBI arrests Twisha Sharma's mother-in-law Giribala Singh after MP High Court quashes anticipatory bail

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday arrested Giribala Singh, a retired district judge and the mother-in-law of the late Twisha Sharma, from her residence in Bhopal's Bag Mughaliya extension area. The arrest came a day after the Madhya Pradesh High Court quashed her anticipatory bail.

A sessions court had granted Giribala Singh anticipatory bail on May 15. The Madhya Pradesh High Court's vacation judge, Devnarayan Mishra, quashed this in a 17-page order, stating that considering the "factual aspects of the case and the allegations levelled against the respondent," the bail granted by the additional sessions judge was to be set aside.

During the High Court hearing, Solicitor General of India Tushar Mehta, representing the CBI, argued that Giribala Singh's custodial interrogation was crucial to the investigation. The CBI opposed anticipatory bail for her and told the court that Giribala Singh and Twisha's husband, Samarth Singh, may have questioned Twisha's character after learning of her pregnancy, citing WhatsApp conversations the agency had acquired.

The CBI also told the court that Twisha was allegedly forced to undergo an abortion, with the claim that the unborn child belonged to someone else.

The CBI further told the court that Twisha's wrist and elbow bore injuries that the in-laws had not explained, and that a medical query report excluded the probability that these injuries occurred during removal of the body from the ligature.

On the same day, a Bhopal court remanded Twisha's husband Samarth Singh in CBI custody.

Twisha Sharma, a former model, was found dead at her matrimonial home in the Katara Hills area of Bhopal on May 12, 2026. She was 33 years old. Twisha married Samarth Singh on December 9, 2025, five months before her death. Samarth Singh is a lawyer by profession.

The CBI formally took over the probe on Monday, re-registering the FIR originally lodged by Madhya Pradesh state police, with Samarth Singh and Giribala Singh listed as accused.
