Cavern Walks Beatles hotel suites plan looks set for go ahead

Major plans to transform the Cavern Walks into 150 hotel suites will be decided next week.

Liverpool Council's planning committee will meet next week and will deliberate over plans that would see the upper floors above the Mathew Street shopping centre turned into a Beatles themed hotel.

The plans come from entrepreneur Craig Greenwood and his company Greenwood Developments, which acquired Cavern Walks in a joint venture with the JSM Property Group in October.

Mr Greenwood has previously spoken about his plans to create a Beatles-themed hotel in Cavern Walks and bring the 'Merseybeat boom' back to the famous area.

The planning application that will come before councillors next week seeks permission to convert the upper floors (floors 1-7) of the building to provide 150 Beatles-themed hotel suites, including reception area and food, beverage, entertainment and function room space on the upper ground floor, mezzanine and first floor.

The plans will incorporate one of the existing retail units on the upper ground floor while the existing lower ground floor retail units will be retained and severed off from the hotel with continued access from Harrington Street and Mathew Street.

If approved, the hotel suites will be a mix of sizes, ranging from six beds to one bed within each room. 14 would be one-bed suites with one 3-bed suite. In total the 150 suites will provide a total of 291 beds. There are also plans for a cinema room.

Speaking about his plans in November, Mr Greenwood said: "Mathew Street still attracts visitors from all over the world. It is synonymous with The Beatles and the Merseybeat era and that's something we're aiming to bring back.

"The Cavern Walks hotel will breathe new life into Mathew Street and has the potential to bring a Merseybeat style boom back to the area. Mathew Street was the beating heart of the city in its 1960s heyday and it can be again.

"This isn't just a hotel development, this will bring massive regeneration to the area and revitalise Mathew Street. People from the city and visitors alike will love it.

"The Cavern Walks Hotel will be a destination in its own right. It will be a symbol of a modern, thriving Liverpool but will pay homage to our incredible music and cultural history."

The plans, which could cost around £35m to complete, are being recommended for approval by council officers but the planning committee will make the final decision when they meet in Liverpool Town Hall on next Tuesday.
