NEW DELHI: Over three-quarters of registered deaths in India remain without causes being medically certified and in a state like Bihar, that proportion is a scarcely believable 96.6%. While nationally there has been a marginal improvement in certification of deaths with the proportion rising from 20.7% in 2019 to 22.5% in 2020, several states have seen a worsening.
Bihar already had the low-est level of certification of cause in 2019 at 5.1%, but has slid even further to a mere 3.4%, or 14,591 out of 4.25 lakh registered deaths. Other states with single-digit certification levels are Jharkhand (6.1%), MP (6.7%) and Nagaland (7.6%). Goa and Manipur have 100% certification of registered deaths, Lakshadweep is at 99.7%.
