Beloved actress Catherine O’Hara‘s cause of death has been revealed less than two weeks after she passed.
The star, best known for her roles in Schitt’s Creek and Home Alone, died of a pulmonary embolism, due to underlying rectal cancer, as confirmed by the Los Angeles County Health Department-issued death certificate.
Initial reporting on Jan 31 by TMZ stated O’Hara died at the age of 71 in her Los Angeles home, following “a brief illness”, but didn’t go into the cause of death.
O’Hara’s career began at the age of 20, performing in an improv troupe, before taking on some of her most notable roles in Beetlejuice, Home Alone and Home Alone 2: Lost In New York.
She was later cast in the show that launched a million memes, starring as Moira Rose in Schitt’s Creek, a role that earned her an Emmy, before recently starring alongside Seth Rogan in his award-winning series The Studio. Rogan and his co-creator Evan Goldberg paid tribute to O’Hara in their recent acceptance speech for the Directors Guild Award, with Rogan saying of his former castmate, “the best part of her is she showed that you can be an utter genius and also the nicest person in the entire world.”
“So ultimately we would like to thank the DGA for this, but we would mostly like to thank Catherine O’Hara,” he said.
Other friends and co-stars have taken to social media to pay tribute to the actress. Home Alone star Macauley Culkin shared his final goodbye to his TV mum via Instagram, saying, “Mama. I thought we had time. I wanted more. I wanted to sit in a chair next to you. I heard you. But I had so much more to say. I love you. I’ll see you later.”
Pedro Pascal, who worked with O’Hara when she guest-starred on The Last Of Us, also shared his farewell on Instagram. Posting an image of the two of them, Pascal captioned it “Oh, genius to be near you. Eternally grateful. There is less light in my world, this lucky world that had you, will keep you, always. Always.”
“The one and ONLY #CatherineOHara,” he wrote.
O’Hara is survived by her husband, production designer and director Bo Welch, and their two sons, Matthew and Luke Welch.
