Cate Blanchett and Michael Fassbender's Black Bag set for March 28 release

Academy Award-winning director Steven Soderbergh is set to bring his latest espionage thriller, Black Bag, to the big screen. In an official statement, the production house announced that the film, featuring an all-star cast, including Cate Blanchett and Michael Fassbender, alongside Marisa Gabrielle Abela, Pierce Brosnan, Tom Burke, Naomie Harris, and Rege-Jean Pagewill released on March 28, 2025.

Director Steven Soderbergh, known for his work on Traffic and the Ocean’s trilogy, collaborated with acclaimed screenwriter David Koepp on the project. Reflecting on their partnership, Soderbergh stated, “David is obviously very good at his job, and I think he generally likes my directing. Knowing that we’re comfortable being honestly critical of each other. Neither of us feels any need to obfuscate.”

Koepp, whose credits include Jurassic Park and Mission: Impossible, revealed that the concept for Black Bag stemmed from his research for the first instalment of the Mission: Impossible franchise. “All the spycraft stuff was very cool, but I learned more than I ever expected about the people,” he shared.

Described as a “crackling thriller” and a “sensuously icy spy” drama, Black Bag follows legendary intelligence agent George Woodhouse (Fassbender) as he grapples with a heartbreaking dilemma—his wife Kathryn (Blanchett) is suspected of betraying the nation. As tensions rise, George is forced to navigate a high-stakes conflict between his unwavering loyalty to his country and his devotion to the woman he loves.

The spy pic Black Bag made its debut at the American box office last week with a $7.5 million weekend. The film which had opened in 2,705 theatres, currently carries a 97% on Rotten Tomatoes. It also got a B CinemaScore.
