Konami is marking Castlevania’s 40th anniversary with a new mainline entry: Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse, a 2D sidescrolling action game coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch, and PC in 2026.
The game was revealed during the PlayStation State of Play on February 12, and is developed by Konami alongside Evil Empire and Motion Twin.
Belmont’s Curse is set in 1499 Paris, where the city is attacked by monsters emerging from the shadows. The story centers on Trevor Belmont’s successor, who takes the Vampire Killer whip into the streets and toward a looming castle as the city collapses around them.
Konami is going back to the series’ roots, starting with the whip as a core mechanic rather than a legacy item or an unlockable. Belmont’s Curse uses the Vampire Killer for both combat and traversal, allowing the players to quickly reposition while keeping the fights fast-paced. Konami says more details about the weapons and abilities will come at a later date, but we saw the protagonist use a sword as a secondary tool already.
The setup and structure of Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse also go back to what feels familiar, with secret chambers, hidden items, and classic environmental tricks, including breakable walls that can hide restoration items.
As for the visual style, Konami comments:
The trailer fully showcases the game’s unique art style, a unique colorful approach that stays true to the classic gothic look but will let you discover the world of Castlevania like never before.
The development team that’s working on the game has an incredible pedigree. Both Motion Twin and Evil Empire worked on the game called Dead Cells and its major DLC, including the Castlevania-themed one, and now they’re making the real Castlevania game. There’s no one better to handle such a precious IP, and after years of strange decisions and weird collaborations, this feels like a proper way to celebrate the series’ 40th anniversary.
We don’t have a specific release date for Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse, but the devs are aiming to release it this year for all the major platforms.
