An estimated 1,500 people enjoyed a wheely spectacular national cycling event at Castle Douglas on Saturday.
And round six of the Scottish Cyclocross Series (SCX) at Lochside Caravan Park was greeted with perfect conditions – a muddy track and sunny skies.
Spectators lined the twisting route through the trees and cheered on the riders with klaxons and cow bells as they negotiated the course.
It was the first time the showpiece event – a combination of road cycling, mountain biking and steeplechase – had been held in the town.
Castle Douglas Development Forum (CDDF), Event Scotland, the council and bike design company Albannach joined forces to stage the event.
CDDF Carolyn Yates told the News: “It was a brilliant day.
“To see the park full of children and families was just what we wanted.
“There were more than 300 entries and each of them brought people with them.
“Then we had the support teams, commissars and officials and of the course the spectators.
“So I think that all in all 1,500 people over the course of the day is a conservative estimate.”
Ms Yates added: “The event was very family focused and it was great to see everyone enjoying themselves.
“The weather played its part too – it could not have been better.”
And dozens of local volunteers pitched in to make the day a smash hit.
