Castle Douglas butcher tastes success at World Championship Scotch Pie Awards

A Castle Douglas butcher is top of the crusts after impressing judges at the World Championship Scotch Pie Awards.

Ballards Butchers scooped various prizes at the annual ceremony attended by pie makers from across Scotland.

The culinary showpiece is the highlight of the year for butchers and bakers looking to outdo their rivals in the pastry stakes.

Ballards boss Jimmy Craig was delighted to gain six awards across the various categories.

Three products won gold – mince bridie, ploughman’s pinwheel and the haggis, neeps and tattie pie.

The chicken korma pie and the macaroni pie scooped silver while the brisket pie claimed a bronze.

Jimmy said: “That’s our biggest haul ever in the competition. We have been there from the start so that’s more than 20 years.

“The thing about winning with my pies is that everybody can afford one. And there’s a type of pie for everybody. It’s great to go to such a big event and come back with so many awards.”
