Casemiro aims dig at Sevilla success with Real Madrid comment following victory over Manchester United

Casemiro couldn't help but aim a dig at Sevilla following their victory over Manchester United when he was asked to compare them to his former club Real Madrid.

In a season that has been littered with humiliating results, United suffered yet another with one of their worst performances of the campaign in Seville. Erik ten Hag's side were dumped out of the Europa League at the quarter-final stage 5-2 on aggregate after slumping to a meek 3-0 defeat on Thursday night.

Captain Harry Maguire gave the ball away on the edge of his box to allow Yossef El-Nesyri to slot in the opening goal after just eight minutes and United never recovered. Loic Bade doubled the lead just after the break as the ball hit his shoulder and looped over a hapless David de Gea.

The goalkeeper made yet another blunder late on as he advanced miles out of his box to meet the ball but produced perhaps the most bizarre touch from a professional footballer of all time to hand it El-Nesyri to turn in from distance. It was a disastrous display from United, who were dreadful on the ball all evening and hardly created any chances.

Even the usually unflappable Casemiro was far below his best with plenty of wayward passes and his frustrations appeared to remain after the match. When speaking to Spanish press after the game, he aimed a cheeky jibe at the victors.

It was put to the Brazilian that Sevilla, who have won the Europa League more than any other club with six triumphs, are similar to his former club Real Madrid as it doesn't matter how they're performing in La Liga - Sevilla are 13th - they can still raise their game for European competition.

When asked if the Europa League is to Sevilla what the Champions League is to Los Blancos, who have won the competition a staggering 14 times, Casemiro scoffed and replied: They still need eight [more trophies] to reach the Real Madrid," before he walked away.

United will now have to pick themselves up after the defeat as they have the tricky prospect of facing Brighton in the FA Cup semi-final on Sunday.
