Cars keep being spotted parked illegally on Central Square in Cardiff city centre. Parked vehicles have frequently been left on the edge of Central Square, near the entrance from Wood Street, and people have been questioning why they are parked there and there they are allowed to be there.
The increase of vehicles parked in the spot has been ongoing for some time, and Cardiff Council have now confirmed that the vehicles are parked illegally. There had been initial confusion about who owns the particular section of land, as Central Square is divided between Cardiff Council, Transport for Wales and developers.
Cardiff Council say that the land is owned by themselves but not yet adopted due to the ongoing realignment of Wood Street where work is ongoing. There were previously yellow lines in place before the work began.

On both Thursday, October 13, and Friday, October 14, several vehicles - mainly made up of cars and vans, could be seen parked up near One Central Square and Cardiff University's building. Motorcycles are also often chained to the bike racks in the area. On Friday afternoon, nine vehicles could be counted in the spot.
There are bollards that prohibit vehicles from driving fully onto the square but that has not stopped vehicles from parking before them. Cardiff Council say that they will be looking to place bollards on the immediate entrance from the road to prohibit the illegal parking.
No cones were initially placed around the vehicles on Thursday night and Friday morning however several appeared after WalesOnline asked Transport for Wales and Cardiff Council who owns the land and whether people can park there. Cardiff Council has confirmed the cones do not belong to them.
There is no indication who placed the cones. South Wales Police have been approached to ask whether they received any reports of illegal parking and whether they placed the cones.
People have been raising the issue of motorists parking on the land for some time. One Twitter user shared a photo of the parked cars and jokingly suggested it was a "great free parking spot" while asking the council for answers about why they allowed it to happen "every day".
Several people replied, with one saying: "A few dozen bollards would sort that out, pronto." and another said: "I see this every single time I pass Central Square - raised the issues loads of times as it is dangerous for pedestrians using the space whilst cars & vans using it as a turning circle and parking everywhere... barriers are in the wrong place if you ask me..."
A spokesperson for Cardiff Council confirmed that the cars were parked illegally and that they were looking to put up bollards. They also said that the cones placed around the vehicles on Friday afternoon were not placed by the council.
