Carol Vorderman has revealed she has suffered abuse after criticising Jeremy Clarkson's column on Meghan Markle on social media. The former Countdown star has not been alone in her chastising of the controversial article, with Clarkson's own daughter Emily posting in an Instagram story: "I stand against everything my dad wrote about Meghan Markle".
In the piece the former Top Gear presenter said he hated Markle "on a cellular level", and adds that he hopes for “the day when she is made to parade naked through the streets of every town in Britain while the crowds chant, ‘Shame!’ and throw lumps of excrement at her.” Despite the column being removed at the request of Clarkson, Ipso revealed it has received more than 20,800 complaints about it.
Vorderman tweeted: "NO Jeremy Clarkson. Not on any level, in any circumstance, is it ok to write this stuff about any woman. And absolutely NO to “everyone who’s my age thinks the same”. No no no.
"We absolutely do NOT think the same. Listen to the noise Jeremy. The crowds are chanting “shame on YOU”."
Following her initial criticism, she reaffirmed her position on the issue, but confirmed she had received social media abuse: "The Clarkson Effect. I’ve received a lot of abuse obvs, but it’s like watching the last death throes of a dinosaur age. Sad souls who are angry at new thought, at equality, at kindness.
"BUT this chapter has also brought the calm, normally silent, people together. We fight on."
