Carol Vorderman launches scathing attack on 'pathetic' tweet from Tory MP

Carol Vorderman has labelled a Conservative MP "pathetic" after he tweeted jokingly about the Partygate scandal. The TV and radio host responded to Brendan Clarke-Smith, a Tory MP, after he tweeted he wouldn't buy sandwiches and orange juice for a football match "in case anybody accuses me of being a law-breaker."

Mr Clarke-Smith's tweet appeared to make light of the recent revelations that Boris Johnson, Rishi Sunak and other government representatives and officials attended gatherings while the UK was in the midst of lockdown restrictions and people were unable to visit dying relatives in hospital.

And the tweet drew an angry reaction from Carol, 61, who replied: "Are you actually a Member of Parliament? I hope your constituents see you mocking all of us who obeyed the rules dictated to us from the podium at No 10, and kick you out at the next election. This tweet of yours above, Mr Clarke-Smith, is pathetic."

As well as the Sue Gray report, which was published this week and revealed a host of top officials had attended gatherings against Covid rules, the Met Police has issued 126 fines to 83 people in connection with Number 10 gatherings, including Boris Johnson,. who was pictured in a room with a drink as several bottles of wine covered a table in front of him.

After initially denying any illegal gatherings took place, Boris Johnson admitted this week that he 'briefly attended' gatherings to thank staff for their contributions during the Covid pandemic. The prime minister said he takes “full responsibility for everything that took place on my watch”.
