Carol Vorderman admits how she got Countdown job as she shares heartfelt message

Carol Vorderman has admitted how she got her iconic role on Channel 4's Countdown.

The 61-year-old is best known for co-hosting the game show for 26 years from 1982 until 2008. Initially, the presenter's only contribution to the show was the numbers game. However, over the following years Carol began handling tiles for both the letters and numbers games.

Carol revealed her intellectual ability on the show by carrying out fast and accurate arithmetic calculations. Her lasting success on the show led to her becoming one of the highest-paid women in Britain, ultimately earning her an estimated £1 million per year.

In a sweet post dedicated to her late mum, on Mother's Day yesterday (March 27), Carol admitted that it was her mother who got her the job. She shared an image of the two of them together as she wrote: "Mum lived with me from the 1980s, through my marriage, divorce, wherever we moved. In 1982, we'd moved to Leeds together."

She continued: "She wrote my application letter to Countdown and forged my signature and then told me what she had done." She followed the caption with several laughing face emojis.

Before the admission, Carol reminisced on her last Mother's Day with her mum. The 61-year-old shared a few video clips from 2017 as she wrote: "Mother's Day 2017. My mum had been told a week before that she had terminal cancer. She was a shy woman but not today. It was her final Mother's Day but she was holding court."

The video showed her mum listing the various people in their family, going from generation to generation. She thanked everyone for coming as all of the family enjoyed a meal together. Carol added the devastating text: "She died two months later" followed by love hearts.
