CARLOS Alcaraz has won the Wimbledon tennis championships men’s singles after beating out tennis star Novak Djokovic.

It marks the first time that 20-year-old Alcaraz has won Wimbledon in a historic occasion for himself and his home country of Spain.

With Spanish flags spotted across the crowds, many hoped that the current world number 1 would lift the trophy.

Djokovic, 36 did not seem to be the fan favourite as crowds at the Wimbledon final were cheering for the young 20-year-old Alcaraz.

At one point in the match, as Alcaraz won his first set, becoming level with Djokovic, crowds jumped to their seats cheering and awarding the player a standing ovation.

Scotland’s First Minister was among those to congratulate the 20-year-old, posting on Twitter: “An unbelievable final, what a thriller. Well done @carlosalcaraz on wining your first Wimbledon.

“Suspect it won’t be his last.”

The young Spaniard, who started playing professionally in 2018, has won 130 matches, only losing 35.

Last year, Alcaraz made it to the fourth round of Wimbledon whilst winning the US Open, seeing him become the world no.1.

Djokovic, the veteran tennis player from Serbia, known for his tough nature, is not used to losing with his 20-year career seeing him win over 1000 matches.

Lifting the trophy, Alcaraz had tears of joy and screamed in happiness as the crowd cheered and clapped over the win.

Djokovic remained humble, congratulating the young player on his historic win.
