Carl Starfelt inists Celtic won't risk Ange Postecoglou's wrath by taking foot off the gas

Carl Starfelt insists the Celtic squad won’t risk the wrath of boss Ange Postecoglou by taking their foot off the gas in the Premiership.

The Hoops went into the World Cup pause with a nine point lead but the defender is adamant the title race is far from over. And if any of the players thought it was they would be in danger of a blast from the boss.

Postecoglou battered his men after defeat to Sydney last week in the Sydney Super Cup – and there’s no chance he’ll allow standards to drop when the real stuff returns next month despite a commanding lead at the top. Starfelt said: “Is the league done and dusted? No, absolutely not. There is a long season ahead and we are not even close to the halfway point, we always take it game by game like we did last season and that’s what we do.

“I think we also have very high standards. The manager is always pushing us every day to never relax. You can see it in training every day and we are trying to be at it and if we fall out of it then the manager is there to push us back into it. I am not worried about complacency.”

An Australian documentary on Postecoglou’s time in charge of the Socceroos emerged last week and it showed behind the scenes footage of the gaffer letting rip at his squad. Starfelt has been on the end of a blast from the Aussie boss as well and he admitted the passion in the dugout drives the club to success.

He said: “Have I seen it? Yes! He is a really good manager and he knows what he wants. If someone falls out of it he will push them back into it. I think most of the boys have experienced the temper at some point. The manager sets high standards and I think that’s how it should be.

“Every player pushing for Celtic and more should have high standards. If you throw players excuses then they will have them. You have to go out there and perform no matter the circumstances.”
