Carl Frampton admits he was offered exhibition bout with ex-World champ

Carl Frampton has revealed that he was offered an exhibition bout with fellow Belfast boxing legend Wayne McCullough.

A number of former boxing champions have returned to the ring in recent times, including Ricky Hatton who took on Marco Antonio Barrera in an eight-round contest in Manchester last month.

McCullough, who held the WBC bantamweight title from 1995 to 1997, currently resides in Las Vegas and remains in top shape at the ripe age of 52.

Frampton is a former two-weight World champion who retired from boxing in 2021 following a glittering career.

The North Belfast 35-year-old has previously admitted he briefly toyed with the idea of coming out of retirement, but is now comfortable with his decision to hang up the gloves.

As for an exhibition bout somewhere down the line, Frampton didn't rule it out completely.

Speaking to William Hill’s Stripped Podcast, Frampton said: "Who would I fight? I don't really know.

"If you gave me long enough I could probably give you a good name.

"I haven't really told anyone this. You have Ricky Hatton and Barrera doing these exhibition fights.

"I have been approached by a former fighter to do one of these fights, Wayne McCullough.

"Wayne is a former World champion, is older than me who is from Belfast, lives in Las Vegas now. He is a friend of mine.

"He has talked about having an exhibition fight with me. At the start I thought it isn't my cup of tea, but maybe. Who knows."

One potential opponent who was put to Frampton was former Manchester United captain Roy Keane.

Known for his hard man image on the pitch, Frampton doesn't believe he would get the better of the Old Trafford legend.

"I love Roy Keane, love him," he said.

"I think people would watch it, but I don't think I would beat Roy Keane in a fight. Not a chance."
