A van driver who killed a cyclist in an early morning smash has walked free from court.
David McGregor, 48, hit William Crawford on the A913 Cupar to Newburgh road in Fife on September 26 2019. The 54 year-old victim tragically passed away two days later in hospital.
McGregor was today sentenced at the High Court in Glasgow. He had previously been convicted after a trial in Dundee of causing death by careless driving.
The charge stated McGregor did fail to maintain proper observations and make suitable reactions to other people on the road. As a result, he collided with mountain biker Mr Crawford, who was left so severely hurt that he never recovered.
Judge Gillian Wade KC today did not jail McGregor and instead told him to do 200 hours of unpaid work as part of a community payback order.
She stated: "This has been a tragic case for all concerned particularly for the family of William Crawford, who have suffered his loss. I am prepared to accept that culpability was of a lower level and that I can deal with you by way of a non custodial sentence."
McGregor, of Crossgates, Fife, must complete with unpaid work within 12 months. He was also banned from the road for two years.
John Scullion KC, defending, earlier told the court today: "There is no allegation of driving at excessive speed. He stopped at the scene and contacted emergency services. He has shown genuine remorse."
