The Arizona Cardinals enter the 2022 season with high hopes and expectations. They also have major questions at cornerback.
As NFL teams cut down their rosters to 53 players by Tuesday afternoon, the Cardinals find themselves with only four cornerbacks on the team.
They will release cornerbacks Josh Jackson and Jace Whittaker, although Whittaker will likely return to the practice squad if he goes unclaimed through waivers.
That leaves only four on the roster — Byron Murphy, Antonio Hamilton, Marco Wilson and Christian Matthew.
The problem is that Hamilton is currently dealing with some sort of undisclosed ailment and his availability for Week 1 is up in the air.
A trio of Murphy, Hamilton and Wilson is unsettling to begin with, although the coaches have praised the progress of Hamilton and Wilson’s talent is undeniable.
But if they roll out a trio of Murphy, Wilson and Matthew, who is a seventh-round rookie out of Valdosta State, against the powerful Kansas City Chiefs offense in Week 1, that unsettling cornerback situation suddenly becomes alarming.
The Cardinals wouldn’t play Week 1 with only three healthy corners, would they?
Whether that is bringing back Robert Alford, who played well last season before he got hurt or trading for a cornerback, the Cardinals must have some plan for the position to be ready for Patrick Mahomes, right?
