Cardinals expected to start ex-Titans QB Josh Dobbs in Week 1

After not publicly declaring who their starting quarterback is, the Arizona Cardinals have reportedly made a decision behind closed doors — and it’s a familiar name in Tennessee.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, former Tennessee Titans and Volunteers quarterback Joshua Dobbs is expected to start Week 1 for the Cardinals when they open the season against the Washington Commanders.

Rapoport notes that the Cardinals will reevaluate the situation from week to week, but for now Dobbs gets the nod over rookie Clayton Tune.

It was just a few weeks back that Arizona traded a fifth-round pick in 2024 to the Cleveland Browns in exchange for Dobbs’ services and a 2024 seventh-round pick.

Dobbs almost miraculously led the Titans to the playoffs last year despite only being with the team for a few weeks after he was signed from the Browns’ practice squad.

The Tennessee product threw for a combined 411 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions over his two starts against the Dallas Cowboys and  Jacksonville Jaguars.

Those respectable performances, along with the familiarity general manager Monti Ossenfort has with Dobbs after he was part of the Titans’ front office that brought him in, undoubtedly played a role in the Cardinals’ decision to acquire Dobbs.

Now, Dobbs finally gets his chance to start the NFL season as a starting quarterback for the first time in his professional career, albeit only temporarily until he falters or Kyler Murray returns from injury.
